Challenge to Succeed Report, by Margot Rott

Challenge to Succeed Ride, sponsored by the Gaston County Cyclists (Sunday, April 14)

We had a great day and turnout for our Challenge to Succeed ride. With rain threatening all weekend, we ended up with mostly sunny skies for our annual spring ride. 63 riders registered, which is two more than in 2001. Twenty of the riders were club members. The majority opted to do the 62 mile route and discovered how the course got its name! No accidents occurred, but we did have one broken chain right at the start of Pinnacle Mtn.. Thanks to Jack Moore for coming along at the right time! A lot of riders hung around at the end of the ride and talked for a while. There were a lot of good comments, both about the course and the rest stops.

Thanks go to Troy Bush & Margot Rott for putting on the ride. Thanks also to the volunteers – Steve Burke, Steve Overstreet, Dean & Lisa (soon to be) Bush for manning the rest stops, Melissa Magee for handling registration.

Special thanks to Rangers Matt Derstine and Joe Sox for granting us the use of Crowder’s Mtn. State Park and its facilities.

Spring Forward Training Ride Saturday, April 6th, 62 miles

Ride report by Joe Price ..

The ride started off Hwy 49 below Carowinds and takes you through parts of Mecklenburg, York and Gaston Counties. It was very well organized and supported. Several sponsors provided drinks, snacks, a RV at one of the rest stops, lunch and door prizes. Except for some of the major roads we had to maneuver through, the route is very rider friendly. An excellent spring tuneup. This was the second year of the ride so look for it next year. The money goes towards a nice cause.

Category 4/5 Race: Chad Leigh: 1st overall & 2 primes

Blair Craig 5th overall & 1 prime

Matt Derstine 23rd overall

Shelby hosted another fabulous criterium as home town favorites put their stamp on the race. Riding for the Wes-Ben / Bohemian Cycles Team were Chad, Blair, & Matt (results listed above) as well as 3 other riders who ride out of Shelby. Before the race ended, much of the field was pulled for being too far behind the lead group, as the race speed average was a blistering 26 mph!

Congratulations to Chad and Blair for their high placings, and also to Matt for his strong finish in the 42-member front pack. This was Matt’s first successful criterium, and has come after a long hiatus from racing.

Rock Hill Bicycle Club 2002 Time Trial Series

TT will be held the first Wed of each month. Warm Up is from 6 to 6:30 with the first rider off at 6:30. Total miles will be around 20. The start area is at the convenience store at the Crossroads 322 & 324. Please park on the far side of the building near the picnic/pavillion area. Dates will be 1 May, 8 June, 3 July, 7 August, 4 September, and 2 October.

One of the best ways to improve you fitness is by the use of time trials. The first one is used to establish your base and each subsequent TT will gauge your increase in fitness due to you training. Additional benefits are developing a better, more aerodynamic position on the bike which will help you in your day-to-day riding. If you have a competitive streak in you, the thrill and satisfaction of overtaking a rider or two that started ahead of you, or not getting passed by a rider that you know is stronger is true inspiration. We stage the riders with the slowest to the fastest. This way we all finish close to the same time so we can all ride back to the start area together. If conditions are bad, we will have the following Wednesday. Please contact Mike Burgess 803-328-8844, wmburg@cetlink.net with any questions.
