Crowders Mountain State Park Work Day Report

On Sunday, March 10th, the Gaston County Cyclists sponsored its first ever volunteer work day at the Crowder’s Mountain State Park in Gaston County. Gaston County is incredibly fortunate to have such a fantastic park so close by, with two major mountains for hiking trails. The park is also undergoing expansion with a link to Kings Mtn State Park. The club’s project was to help reduce future erosion effects by beginning the process of closing some impromptu trails which have developed.

Participating were Stephen Dow, Reese Wilson, Margot Rott, Dorothy & Ed Keene, Jack Moore, Ralph Rutledge, Melissa Magee, and several others whose names I don’t have. Thank you to all that volunteered!

The work day was publicized at our club meetings and over the internet (on the website & our club’s e-list), but was inadvertently left out of the March newsletter. Please accept my apologies if you missed out! The club plans to do this project on a periodic basis, perhaps once or twice per year, and will publicize it much better next time!

Want to get more involved? Consider joining the Friends of Crowders Mountain State Park, see www.friendsofcrowdersmountain.org for more information, or call the park at 704-853-5375.

Thought for the Day

"Every time I see an adult on a bicycle I no longer despair for the human race." - H.G. Wells (courtesy of Jeanette West)

In That Vein … Cannondale Donates Bikes to Afghan Athletes
Cannondale recently donated world-class racing bikes and equipment to two Afghan cyclists training for the 2004 Olympic games. Cannondale decided to contribute new road bikes and cycling apparel to Afghan athletes Taj Mohammed and Habibulla after hearing the men were training for the 2004 Olympics with substandard equipment and in extremely difficult conditions. Assisting in the arrangements was Cannondale dealer City Bikes in Washington, D.C.

Cannondale contacted Senator Joseph Lieberman (D-CT) to help get the gear to the Afghan athletes. Lieberman worked with the Defense Department to arrange for Senator Ted Stevens (R-AK) and Senator Daniel Inouye (D-HI) to take the bikes and apparel to Afghanistan. ABC News delivered the bikes to the racers in Kandahar. Cannondale Communications Director Tom Armstrong said, "When we learned of the dire situation of the Afghan athletes, we wanted to do what we could to help them reach their goal of competing in the 2004 Olympics. We hope that the Cannondale bikes and cycling apparel will better enable them to train for the next summer games in Athens."
