Bridge to Bridge Lenoir to Grandfather Mtn, Sept 16, 2001, sponsored by the Caldwell County Chamber of Commerce

Blair Craig 5:25, Jim Weant 5:47, Troy Bush 5:55 (ride included changing a flat tire), Margot Rott 6:07, John Price 6:08 (a personal record for 5 attempts at this event), Scott Moss 6:20, Dan Splawn, Jr 7:01, Paula Weant 7:12.

Bridge summary by John Price:

About 600-700 riders participated in this year’s 13th edition of Bridge to Bridge.  The start in Lenoir was on the cool side at 45 degrees, but the day promised to be great with clear skies in the forecast.  Riders were treated to spectacular views along the Blue Ridge Parkway’s Lynn Cove Viaduct as well as from the summit of Grandfather Mountain.  The front pack of about 150 riders stayed intact for the first 51 miles (taking 2 hours and 15 minutes) through Caldwell County to the base of the 13 mile climb up Hwy 181.  At about the 45 mile mark I recall letting a small gap open in front of me, and deciding to let someone else close it down.  Unfortunately, it was fellow club member Margot Rott that had to do the work.  About 1 ½ hours later she finished the 181 climb just in front of me, and we entered the Blue Ridge Parkway together.  From there I took off really hard, and was sure that was the last I’d see of her, but almost 2 hours later Margot came zipping by me about ½ way up the 2 mile Grandfather Mtn. climb.  She said she was tired, but finished a minute in front of me, which is remarkable considering I was feeling the best I’ve ever felt on a bike, and she’s not only much older than me but a female to boot.

Particulary rewarding for me was my fan club of 7 family members (3 siblings along with an assortment of spouses & children) that travelled from Raleigh, Concord, and Rock Hill, SC to watch the ride.  They were present at the start, at the 30 mile mark when the pack returned to Lenoir, at the 64 mile mark (Jonas Ridge), and at the summit of Grandfather Mtn.  As everyone is aware, you typically do bike rides in complete anonymity, so it was exhilirating to have people yelling my name along the way.  I can’t adequately express how fortunate I feel to have such a supportive family.

Multiple Sclerosis Breakaway to the Beach (MS 150) September 22 (75 miles Rockingham or Lugoff to Florence) & September 23 (80 miles Florence to North Myrtle Beach)

Team Coasters Report by Captain Rich Perlman:  I drove down from Newport News, VA (300 miles) to Rockingham. I have done this event for 8 consecutive years, so I did not let the distance deter me. I was captain of the Coasters, a group of riders from Gaston County, 16 riders on the team, several new to the event. Most of us rode together as a group, sporting our red and white Coasters jerseys. Although we  averaged around 17 mph each day while riding, we stopped at every rest stop, so we did not arrive at Florence and North Myrtle Beach until mid-afternoon each day. All members of our team completed the entire ride, with some aches and pains but no medical incidents. Volunteers again were wonderful, staffing rest stops and providing various logistical support. We had a few flats, and one of our riders had his bottom bracket completely repaired in about 15 minutes by the crew of a friendly bike shop. They charged him only $1, for the bearings! Once again, the staff of the MS Society organized a wonderful event, and we helped raise a lot of money for a great cause. We are already looking forward to next September.
Coasters team:  Dan Trueman, Tricia Hageman, Jennifer Kay, Amy Novinc, Michael Dickson, John Kelkenberg, Rich Perlman, Gary Lutz, Keith Lutz, Ben Cockfield, Rich Brock, Doc Bradshaw, Tim Leach, Scott Cruikshank, Jeff Cobb,
Merritt Yackey.

Other area riders:  John Price, Joe Price, Jack Moore, Chris Fiehweg, Jim & Flo McCarthy, George Pender, Greg Mull, John Medlin, Sid Warren, & Barry Lee (rode the MS 35 due to a mechanical).

A big thank-you goes to the various spouses and friends that provided SAG assistance.

Barry Lee extends a special thank-you to his wife Funda for picking him up in Lugoff after his bike broke ½ way to Florence.
Price Brothers report (by John Price)  Having ridden over 30,000 miles the last six years, I decided to show my “big” brother Joe what a great bike rider I am by letting him tag along on the beach ride this year.  Joe, at 49 years of age, is 12 years older than me and in his first year of cycling. As so often happens with male siblings, the “older brother rule” has meant that he has always beat me in everything from golf to basketball.  So imagine my surprise when we averaged  18 1/2 mph the first day of the beach ride with only two rest stops.  “Surely,” I thought, “he’ll struggle the second day with tired legs,” but he stayed right on my wheel as we averaged an incredible 22 mph from our hotel in Florence to the high school in North Myrtle Beach.  “Man,” I’m thinking, “it took me three years before I could think about riding 80 miles in one day.”  I decided to cap the ride off by sprinting off the front at the end, only to turn into the wrong driveway and have him pass by me and finish in front.  There’s just something about older brothers.

Tour d’Alps  August 16-24, 2001; Europe.  Thanks go to Paula Weant for this account of a recent cycling vacation taken by club members Troy Bush & Margot Rott, Jim & Paula Weant, and Ralph Rutledge & Melissa Magee.

I'll be the first to admit, I was very apprehensive about our trip to Europe. I was not concerned about the biking portion, I knew once we were on the bike tour, our guides would be with us to take care of any problems. My biggest concern was - how would four bumpkins (Margot, Troy, Jim & I) from Gaston County survive the first five days before the tour where we did not speak or read the language. I just knew we would starve because we could not read the menus, get hopelessly lost in our rental car, or cause a national incident while trying to communicate with the locals.

Our first five days turned out to be a very pleasant surprise. We found very few people who spoke English but we did know enough Italian and with hand gestures, were able to communicate. We never really got lost in our rental car with Jim as our driver and Troy as our navigator, we just went a few places we did not intend to go. Eating turned out to be a true experience. We would just close our eyes and pick items off the menus and pray they would be edible. We had some wonderful meals, great & cheap local wines with very few bad surprises (raw bacon, squid).

We stayed in Aosta, Italy, the first five days of our trip and took some wonderful day trips. We spent one day in Zermatt, Switzerland home of the Matterhorn. One day driving around the lake region of Como and Lugano. Our favorite day was in Cogne, Italy, a national park with fabulous hiking. We also went to Courmayeur home of the Italian side of Monte Blanc (Europe's tallest mountain).

I think Troy and Margot were tired of driving and welcomed the biking portion of our trip. We had 14 riders and two guides. We rode for 7 days (about 300 TOUGH miles) and had two hiking days (the glacier @ Monte Blanc and Refuge Du Fond De Fours in Val D'lsere). This year we had new rental bikes with Campy components which worked well after getting used to the system. The riding was difficult with lots of climbing. Thankfully, we did have good weather all but two days. The scenery was spectacular, the most beautiful I have ever seen.

I can honestly say this vacation turned out to be my most favorite. We did have a few little hiccups but they only added to the experience. I am truly glad that Margot, Troy, Ralph, and Melissa were with Jim and me during our trip. It makes the vacation even more special sharing it with friends. I am looking forward to my next trip to Europe and can't wait to share our pictures with my bike gang.  -Paula Weant

   Cotton Pickin' Metric Century

27 OCTOBER 2001 – SATURDAY

Join the Rock Hill Bicycle Club for its fall metric century. Ride the full metric century or take a shorter loop of about 25 miles. The ride travels though rolling hills, farms, and forest. The fall foliage should be at its peak the last week in October. You’ll pass one of the last cotton gins in the upstate and, if you look carefully, you will see the battlefields and homes where the movie "The Patriot" was filmed. The finish will be within a couple of miles of Historic Brattonsville; you may like to stop by to see 18th and 19th century reenactments, visit historic homes, and learn about the history of the area. Bring the family because there is plenty to do and see. Historic Brattonsville is surrounded with picnic tables and trails for walking, nature observation, and hiking.

Entry Fee: $10.

Roads will be marked, maps and cue sheets will be provided. Rest stops will be approximately every 15 miles with food and refreshments. There are a few country stores along the way as well. You will find one or two strenuous climbs with some rough pavement, but the majority of the route is smooth and rolling to flat.

Directions: Take 1-77 to Exit 82B and Cherry Road (Cherry Road turns into McConnells Hwy, SC 322); turn left at intersection with SC 324 about 7 miles outside of Rock Hill. Register at Bethesda Fire Department just east of intersection. (Note: you can find the intersection of SC 322 and 324 on most SC maps.)

Registration is 7 to 8AM with the ride leaving between 8 and 9AM. Pre-register by sending your $10 check to the Rock Hill Bicycle Club, P. 0. Box 12187, Rock Hill, SC 29731

More info: Call Mack Bailey at 803-329-2321 or email mbailey@cetlink.net Rock Hill Bicycle Club

SAG Vehicle Signs

After providing the rolling SAG for the Dog Days ride in July, club members Leane & Stephen Dow identified the need for signage that would mark our support vehicles.  Leane took ownership of this project and has, with club funds, purchased four magnetic signs for use in future rides.  Thank you, Leane!
