Polar Bear Ride 2001 - Sunday, January 14th

The Polar Bear ride for 2001 is Sunday, January 14th.  See the enclosed flyer for additional details.  If you have any questions, contact Charlene Angel at 704-867-9992.

Gaston County Cycling Map

For several years, club president Jim Weant has been working with local transportation officials and the NC Dept. of Transportation (NCDOT) to develop a cycling map for Gaston County.  The state has appropriated money for this project.  The NCDOT appears to be moving closer to approving a design.

The newsletter editor hopes that this map will attract new riders to cycling.  Additionally, he hopes that the map will help to reinforce cycling as a legitimate road use.  Hopefully, the map will encourage transportation planners to consider road improvements specific for cycling.  In particular, we have already seen Gastonia implement Share The Road signs and wider right lanes in certain areas.

1st Ever Insane Mountain Challenge

This ride, scheduled for Sunday, Nov 5, was canceled due to forest fires.  The organizers hope to reschedule this event.

Bikes for Christmas – Clean-up & Repair

Ron Hutchins has agreed to collect bikes for donation to less fortunate children in Gaston County.  If you have a bike to donate, please contact Ron at 704 827-1234.

Final Word

Training tip from Lance Armstrong’s website (http://lancearmstrong.com):  For all you cyclists out there tired of spending money on the latest and greatest equipment, here’s an inexpensive purchase that will greatly improve your performance - buy a 2nd front wheel computer magnet.  For only a few dollars, you will suddenly find your training miles and average speeds doubling overnight.
